Tri-cams are like any other piece of trad gear - the more you use them the more you develop an eye for their placements.

True - they are pretty widely used in the US. Part of the "standard" beginners rack are the pink, red and brown tri-cam. They are bomber in pockets (but the small ones do get stuck).

There are certain placements where they are better than cams - if placed properly, they have less tendency to walk than cams.

You will also find them on most Alpinist racks, as they are lighter and can be better placed in iced up cracks.

The downside is they can be a bit fiddly to place - so not necessarily a piece of gear you reach for first when in a desperate stance.
