I'm sure that the Dragon's thumb and sling system is simply an exercise in product differentiation - and a decision driven entirely by the marketing department. The testiness of Chris Rowlands' reply, when his new product is alleged to be a C4-copy, certainly points in this direction. Some of my cams are of the extendy-sling variety and I can say that it's not a feature I find that useful. They're fiddly to extend and after you do that you may as well just have clipped them with a trad draw (which is longer and more versatile anyway). But I guess the only other feature that differentiates Dragons over C4s is "a little bit lighter" and, clearly in the opinions of the marketeers, that isn't enough to get them over the line.
