Completely agree with this -- put together a system that works for you out of bits you're likely to have with you all the time, or carry dedicated gear for this purpose, and practice. Knowing you can use 2 belay devices in a row won't help you if you're only carrying one -- I don't usually have a spare ATC, but I usually have spare lockers. I nearly always use a backup device like a Shunt -- it helps if I'm stopping to inspect, or fix a cluster, or take photos -- and a great side effect is controlling the amount of friction. The thing is to know how your system behaves before you commit yourself to it.

Sometimes enough extra friction can be as simple as swapping brake hands: if you're rigged for right-handed braking, drag the rope around your back and brake with your left hand. If you still need more, wrap the free end around your leg.
