There's a method for getting into descending mode using a sling wrapped between 2 biners -- sorry can't find link for it right now -- where you clip the sling into the top biner, wrap it through the bottom biner and then back up through the top, so you've got a few wraps making a quickdraw-like arrangement, except one end of the sling is free. Tie that free end off. Before you do anything, tie in short. Clip the top biner to your top ascender, bottom biner to your harness. Clip your abseil device in. Untie the bottom end of the sling and start feeding it out -- it should unwrap slowly, until you've lowered yourself onto your abseil device. Unclip your ascender and away you go. Much easier than stepping up to unweight. Of course my description of this procedure is awful, and if you follow it word for word you might die.
