It does sound like a blame the risk takers article. Especially when they wack this on the end.

* Log your skiing plans with the local police.
* Always prepare for the worst-case scenario."

-Check forecast they probably did. Besides forecast never change and are known for there reliability with in mountainous areas.
-They survived the first few nights I'm guessing there clothing was good. Sounds like they just stuffed the campsite location.
-Epirb fair call. Would help if hire was any time instead as 9-5 is poor timing on the part of the NPWS
-Seriously who asks the NPWS to check there gear????? The few times I have been in there it was manned by middle aged women (who didn't look particularly fit) who couldn't tell me where it was illegal to camp on the main range.
-Tried the police once they don't care.
- You know they should have carried a second tent and stashed it in case the first blew away....
