Yeah, I've used a 9.7 for 4 years with a grigri. No problems at all - even when it was brand new and slippery (it was dry coated).
I've got a thinner one now (9.3 or 9.4 I think). I haven't used it much yet but it has been OK with grigri. I just remind the belayer that it is thin AND that it is new. "Keep your hands on the brake end!" It catches falls no problem.

I reckon the issue is with new ropes of all sizes. They can be so slick when new. I had problems with a new 10.2 (can't remember the brand) a few years ago.
Petzel have a (obviously) conservative recommendation re size.
Keep you hands on the belay device and you won't drop anyone. (Petzel have updated their advice on how to use a grigri safely over the last few years too).
