Hi Adski, Matte prints vs Gloss lose around 1 to 2 stops of dynamic/contrast range = given that scanners are already "re-compressing" the image from a print am not surprised that scans from matte prints are not as good. * I always ask for 6" x 8" borderless gloss prints from 35 mm machine processing places = best value in terms of $ per area, dynamic range, viewability. * Hiring a good scanner for a weekend sounds like a good compromise.
