I'm onto my second Olympus and also a Minaret after the first ones were stolen from my garage. I haven't tested the new ones to make a comment on them, but the originals were very good. I'm a little bit disappointed that they've added a guy to hold the vents open, the my originals had a small acrylic strip that opened the vent. In general the biggest problem has always been their weight.
In my opinion, your choices in tents will depend in what your doing. For me I prefer bushwalking in alpine areas, so I'm always looking for a snow capable tent, something that many of the cheaper tents can't do. I prefer a tent that will collapse in the event of excessive snow build up as you can always dig it out, over a free standing tent that will blow away (rarely but sometimes with the occupants inside). The single skin tents don't breathe a well as the double skin tents, and the floor in many of the specialist mountaining tents are only suited to snow on smooth rocks, rather than vegetation, because of how easily they can tear.
I'm still looking for my ideal 1 man tent, something along the lines of a scaled down, minaret or olympus but still with 3 poles, weight 1.6 - 2.0 kg and snow capable. |
