right through might be pretty unlikely but i'd say damaging a rope is bad enough

ok, without a picture, start at the bottom, climb up a few meters and a few meters to the side, put in a piece, clip both ropes. then climb up and back to the center line and clip one rope. climb up and fall. one rope takes the tension, the other is completely slack in the fall. at the first piece you'll have one rope still and the other moving over it under tension. sure its not taking the force the top piece will, but there's one example. its probably worse when they're moving differently in the top piece, like if one takes up before the other does etc.
