whatever you do- don't do the approach in plastics!!
I have a vivid memory of walking down from Mt Aspiring in borrowed plastic boots, black (bruised) shins and blood blisters on the soles of my feet, contemplating where is the last point that I can "twist" an ankle or similar so I could justify a chopper rescue.
Then after descending the staircase i just took the plastics off and walked the rest in the inners.
Mind you, that was a stupid decision on MY behalf to "save weight" and not take a known, worn in pair of boots for the approach. |
