The best range of boots that I've found in Melbourne is at Bogong, and they have a few staff members who actually know what they're talking about when suggesting boots.

My two cents - if you're going to altitude (but still below 7000m), you're pretty much stuck with plastics (unless you can actually find the La Sportiva Spantik in Australia). If you want a technical boot for lower altitude, then you can stick with leathers which will be more comfortable and capable. In reality, you won't find a boot that is great for everything - you'll need multiple boots if you want to do NZ as well as altitude. The other option is to simply hire them for the first experience if you're going to NZ, as you can try and see what fits you well and works over a few days before you buy.
