I have silvretta 500 bindings installed on a cheap pair of fat skis (about 165cm long). The Scarpa Inverno's fit really well, and so do Sportiva Evo Extremes. It's a pretty good set-up for accessing climbs, and not too bad for touring or spending a day on a resort if you are wearing AT or downhill boots.
As you're looking for a ski/binding set-up to take you climbing, then I'd recommend looking at them. There are better and lighter weight options for AT bindings, but I don't know of any other binding that takes mountain boots.
The other thing to consider with Silvretta's is the sizing - my size 44 Inverno's only just fit in the binding when fully extended. Downhill boots fit no problem though.
As for ski's, I'd look into either shorter fat ski's and skins, or short, fat touring ski's with scales. Long, thin XC ski's are great on trail, but when skiing up through trees or powder they don't perform that well. They may not go that well with a mountaineering boot / binding set-up either. |
