On the topic of broken rock at Mount Arapiles, I have broken a handful of crimps and footers here at the mount. I do get onto poorly traveled routes, however, the commonality in all of the rock failures was rain. All of the rock that I have broken had been recently wet.
We know sandstone is much weaker wet. I suspect even the beautiful hard Arapiliean quartz is weaker after the rain.
Now that the drought has broken I suspect scary broken rock stories will only become more frequent.
Climb safe. |
