On the 5th October 2011, Robbie and I had just completed our 2nd climb on Bum Rock at Arapiles, a cliff neither of us had climbed before. After the first climb we guessed at the descent and I found it slightly unsafe. For the 2nd descent I tried a different route which was when I fell. I was gripping with my right fingertips and barn doored out with my left side when the rock broke off in my hand. I fell about 5 metres, causing a multitude of injuries including 3 fractures to my heel. My question is; should we mark the safest route off a climb/cliff? I believe in hindsight that a discrete mark that only a climber would see could save climbers from this kind of accident.
