neil,
the best advice i can offer is to start a stretching routine twice a day. be disciplined in your approach. i found the simple morning salute routine used in yoga very beneficial. i thoroughly recommend the yoga for surfing part 1 DVD. it has a great 40min sequence. which also has a very good balance section at the end.

i've had a bad back for nearly 20 years (originally done in 1991, falling out of a moving bus pissed in Brisbane. i landed like a cat on my feet however the inertia and alcohol made me run straight into a concrete council bin resulting in a hair line fracture of my pelvis).
being 17 and stupid, i never had it treated properly and compounded with years of surfing / bouldering has made it very tight and painful.
but when i reached my 30's the problem really became problematic.

i was training quite intensively for climbing and doing loads of core training, which only helped a little. but after 4 months of religously stretching, the pain was all but gone (except after a few hours surfing or doing loads of boulderin and dropping on to pads).

i dont stretch as much as i should now, but i know that when my back starts flaring up, a week of stretching twice a day soon relieves it.

i hope that helps some what.

also stretch before a day at the crag and especially at the days end. definately before you decide to jump in the car a drive home on a 1 - 2 hour drive.
