WW: just to add to clancy's good advice, I'd point out that the atacand plus that you are on is a combination drug containing an angiotensin receptor blocker and a diuretic.

Southcol: it's an interesting question - there are a small number of cases of aortic dissection reported in association with weightlifting - cranking hard may well replicate similar cardiovascular strains to this. However, there are lots of muscle marys out there not dissecting their aortas (aortae?), so I suggest the risk of climbing-associated aortic dissection is low. Climbing long moderate routes would have to be good for your heart, as a sustained aerobic activity, not to mention the walk-ins.

Betablockers cross the blood-brain barrier and can have profound effects on some people, including increased weight and impaired attention and mental performance. They don't have these effects on most people to any significant degree, however. Unless you suffered derangement of electrolytes from other blood pressure drugs, they would be unlikely to impact on climbing ability.

(Apparently diuretics make you look less fat, if you believe Shane Warne's mum; although cynics may think that they might help you hide steroid use from testing authorities.)
