As a pharmacist (general medical advice disclaimer etc) - basically there is an interaction between the combination of an NSAID (ibuprofen, diclofenac etc - brands Nurofen, Advil, Voltaren etc), an ACEi or AT2 blocker (ramipril enalapril, candesartan, irbesartan) and a diuretic (a thiazide or frusemide etc). Which if taken in combination (and adding a touch of dehydration) then they can cause the kidneys to be starved of blood and hence cause kidney failure.

The issue that the papers are blowing up is that there are an increasing number of combination blood pressure meds that include an ACEi or AT2 blocker and a thiazide diuretic (atacand plus, karvezide, avapro HCT etc) which if you add an NSAID to you get the above combination. Generally you need to add old age (lower kidney function) and dehydration to get problems but not all the time (luck of the draw). Occasionally it is also possible to manage acute renal failure with just dehydration and an NSAID.

Hope that helps. If you are on a beta-blocker, calcium channel blocker etc - you should be fine (assuming no other medical issues that might make using an NSAID a bad idea). Though there is some evidence to show reduced healing rates (particularly of ligaments) when NSAIDs are used into the post acute injury healing.

Standard advice - have a chat with your pharmacist/GP next time you see them and keep the use as short as possible anyway.
