Wendy someone told me to see a Rheumatologist to see if it was rheumatoid arthritis (the degenerative one).

The Osteo i saw told me the only proper test for arthritis was a blood test, and that a GP cant rule out arthritis by just looking at your hand (which is what mine did!). The Dr (obviously not a very good GP!!) told me mine wasn't arthritis based on the fact that it doesn't hurt - however the Osteo also told me that in 90% of cases arthritis wont actually hurt, and so advised i insist on a blood test.

Does that make sense?

So in summary, id see the GP, get a blood test, then consider seeing the Rheumatologist. Based on how that turned out, i'd also consider asking the GP for a referral to a hand specialist.
