so, what is the problem?
we will all die.
all of us.
most of the strategies designed to add to the length of life, diminish its quality.
climbing is about adding to the quality.
of course we all want to have as much of this high quality life as we can.
unfortunately (no, fortunately) there has to be a trade off.
a mountaineering death, a climbing death is a reminder that we may be trying to be as safe as possible, but either way, we are decreasing the odds of ending up in a nursing home, have a really low quality of life extended for as long as possible.
embrace the mortal moment.
send your heart out to the departed.
but where is the tragedy?
it lies in our own fears.
yes people leave offspring behind.
its sad to lose a parent.
as sad as the dad who pisses off, leaving mum to cope.
as sad as being driven to school by parents who are so full of fear that they don't remember that their parents told them not to talk to strangers, and who may resist the knowlege that the danger is usaully not with the stranger.
there should be public celebrations of mountain deaths, by those involved in the art.
it should be secret rockfolk's business, though.
