this report has some interesting test results from recent destruction testing of biners (among other gear) -

one of the tests used 50mm tape that dramatically reduced the breaking strength (eg Steel Stubai locker
rated at 3400kg broke at 2600kg). This was due to the wider tape placing more load on the gate side
rather than the spine which is strongest. Even 25mm tape will reduce the strength of a biner.
