From a cyclist's perspective:
Bike helmets are made to absorb shock and dissiapte the shock within their structure, they break to absorb the impact. Therefore, after you have had one (reasonable) crash in them they must be replaced. From my understanding with climbing helmets, the majority of them seem to be variations of a plastic or some other type of shell with padding which can absorb repeated impacts (again - of a reasonable nature!).
A bike helmet is better than none, but it has its limitations with respect to longevity.
