Well I've done level 2 first aid, learnt about snake bites, what to do if someone loses a limb, if someone is suffering from shock... etc etc.. But it comes down to what you remember from it, and in an emergency situation you must use "common" sense to analyse the situation and determine the best action to carry out.
It won't teach you how to perform surgery in the middle of a park. It's to treat the person the best you can before the medical dudes arrive.
I realise a lot of those in my class expected to learn more from the course, but they often had to be reminded we aren't there to fix cracked skulls!! That's what the Doctors are for *nods*
Although the course does give you the confidence to attend to someones need, even if the attention is just strapping an ankle! You feel like you "know" what to do because you've been "taught" it, even if it's something you already knew before the course.
I only do the first aide course cause I have to.
