Hey Neil, sounds like you've injured the joint capsule, and probably the collateral ligaments of the joint (the side ligaments). This happens a lot in basketballers/netballers.... a "stubbed finger" was what it used to be called when I was a kid. Maybe you had a small injury, and repeated climbing made the injury worse and/or caused some joint inflammation. Assuming you don't have a bony injury, the recovery can take quite a while. Might be worth seeing Julian or a hand specialist and having a chat... they can tell a lot more by having a look at it. An Xray would be worthwhile to exclude a small fracture within the joint, but it sounds unlikely, considering you can't remember an actual injury.
