>Decision making as a belayer is best based on leading experience! ... or inversely what would you like your belayer to be doing if you were leading it (and act/suggest accordingly)? >I'd say its the leaders call, but there is nothing to stop you making helpful suggestions that they might appreciate. Makes sense. I usually end up getting belayed by whoever's around - some who are experienced leaders, some who haven't lead. >Better still, don't climb slabs. The grades I lead are fairly modest so there there's usually plenty of stuff below to land on. I'm a better theoretical climber than actual - very gutsy on a 2nd.
