I read through these comments and suggested link - interesting stuff. I've been leading for a few years but haven't really considered the belaying side of things to this depth. One thing I would be interested in is the degree to which the terrain you're leading on effects all this. A lot of climbs have all sorts of obstacles, non-vertical rock below you so your natural reaction is not wanting to fall too far. Any thoughts on how you adjust your decision making as a belayer in different circumstances (i.e. terrain) - is that the leader's call or the belayer's judgement/common sense?
