I have a ganglion on the back of my hand just before the wrist joint. It's probably about the size of a marble. I didn't get it climbing, but through digging post hole with a crowbar. It was huge at first, then looked like it was getting smaller but was just settling into a cosy life on the back of my hand.

I was told by a doctor that they can sometimes go away, but it is possible that it may be there forever. This doctor did in fact recommend the old bash-it-with-a-bible method. He said that extracting the fluid from the cyst doesn't do much, that it will just come back and that the cyst needs to be burst completely, hence the bible. I would like to get my Times World Atlas to it after a few drinks and when I get the courage.

I have also got a small one at the base of my middle finger, just from opening a door (I blame the badly designed door handles that had quite acute edges). It was quite sore at first and icing etc was probably useful, but the cyst has been there for years now and probably won't go away unless another freak incident crushes the little bugger, enough to burst it. Fortunately this one doesn't bother me at all, unlike the wrist one which can hurt a little after climbing. The same doctor who told me to bash it with a bible also had a small one at the base of his finger and said he used to play with it all the time, and one day he was doing that and it just suddenly disappeared, just burst it and it was gone for good.
