In the absence of any medical details: If you had an operation 5 years ago, and the hernia hasn't recurred while you are living an active life, it should be irrelevant to any further medical certificate requirements and there should be no limits at work or play. In labourers usually light duties from 6 weeks and normal duties from 10 weeks post hernia repair. Collagen is pretty well cross linked ( ie scar tissue matured) by 120 days.
