Ok, here’s the deal. You have had a simple cramp, or spasm, in part of one of two muscles. Each of these muscles has 4 slips, one to each finger; i.e., each finger has 2 slips controlling flexion. If your fingers were curled into your palm, then it was in flexor digitorum profundas, the stronger of the 2, and known as the prime mover of finger flexion. If your fingers were bent in the middle joint but not at the last joint, then it was in flexor digitorum superficialis. The reason you could not extend your wrist was that, although these muscles primarily cause finger flexion, they also assist with wrist flexion (usually in combination with 2 other wrist flexors). By massaging and stretching you have relaxing the spasm and enabled normal range of motion. The pain you describe is typical of that following a cramp or spasm, or mild muscular strain.
The pathophysiology behind this type of cramp is not well understood.
Hope that helps.
Kind regards’
Julian
