you have also said that your workmates think he was stupid, which really adds nothing and is somewhat derogatory.

Indeed, far from being "stupid" he appeared to take quite rational action in order to extract himself from the situation.

Its a given that he should have let someone know his plans...but really.....

Kieranl wrote " No-one could imagine doing it without benefit of anaesthetic"....why not...thats exactly what the used to do beofre anaesthetic, medical history is full of examples of this, its what "barber " surgens did all the time!

I'm sure not many people could imagine performing an amputation with their arm pined beneath a boulder let alone without aneasthetic.....far from being shocked, as you claim your non-foolish co-workers were, i find it to be yet another amazing show of what a person can do against seemingly insurmountable odds, when many others would have simply seen no option at all and let themselves expire.

Given his resourcefulness and "survival" skills he is a dead set ledgend! Truely amazing.
