Whatever happened then to the belayer yelling "Off Belay". I was taught, and insist, on calls being confirmed with "OK". So a climber yelling 'safe' (or even a mistaken 'take'), the belayer should call out "Off Belay", and receive the "Ok" before the rope actually leaves the device. But totally agree with Mikl's post, that you never say "Safe", unless you want to be taken off belay.
