Good discussion all. I agree that it would be nice to know the circumstances - even why the belayer left the scene - no judgement, just learn from what happened. As far as EPIRBs / remote communication devices go, check out the Delorme inReach SE - been testing them at work - tracking / 2-way texting / SOS - US$300 for the unit and basic service US$10 month. Well worth it and works everywhere.
