Very hard to judge. Couldn't see what he had placed exactly let alone how marginal the placements were. And I've never climbed there so I have no idea of the quality of the rock. Thought I saw some rock fragments flying when one of the placements failed, did I imagine that?
A different belay device and a softer catch might have helped if the difference between those pieces holding and pulling was small. But they might have pulled anyway and the extra give in the system put him on the ground. |
