Dear John:
I don't know where else to turn. I love your stuff and think you may be one of the only people who can truly help me. My problem is that I have a huge, almost obscene desire to be a famous and respected poet/singer-songwriter/performance artist/recording star but I increasingly suspect that I have virtually no talent whatsoever. It seems that all the lessons and study in the world have not helped and now I feel despair creeping in. The reason I love your stuff so much is that you have always struck me as being somewhat similar to myself in regards the huge disparity between your ambitions and your ability to realise them. My question really is how do you keep on believing in yourself when it must be pretty obvious by now that you have very little to offer that is of any real interest? The fact that you keep on keeping on in spite of your obvious lack of genius is truly inspiring to a fellow duffer like me. What's the trick? Are you into religion or do you do drugs?
