I saw Robbie's comment this morning but couldn't see the point refuting some pretty petty sarcasm when one of this site's primary aspects is finding a lift or finding a catch.

I had a car the last few years and even if there were only a couple spare seats I'd still offer it on Chocky, petrol spread between two isn't bad, three or four adds up to allow more money for beer and baggies.
picking up for wear and tear sounds pretty damn tight, you've got the convenience of having a car all the time, it's your choice.
for the crazy and sporadic things that can happen on random hitches, i reckon the token petrol money's just a bonus
