Couldn't agree more with M9.

The first time I climbed the only info I had on the topic had been gained through reading Glenn Tempest's book. Its not ideal but it does provide the novice with some interesting campfire stories in later years.

Read up... Glenn's book is good, so is alot of the material from 'chockstone press' (John Long's books)

Buy some gear... the cheapest stuff is online

Go climbing... Routes like tiptoe ridge at araps, spiral staircase etc... If you're going to learn to do it by yourself (and you can) the trick is not to bite off more than you can chew to early... try to stay below grade 10 for a while.

Or, if you are *really* struggling to find someone to climb with:
1. Climbing gyms\this site has ad's for other people wanting climbing partners (most have gear already.
2. If all else fails, go up to araps and ask ppl if they'd mind you tagging along. I did it when I was about 15 and you'll get a few knock backs but the people you do end up climbing with are normally really nice\interesting so its worth it in the end. After a summer of doing that I had climbed with everyone from a economics professor to a full time pines resident... good times!
