I take on many newbies. The best thing that can be done is to buy a rope and use it whilst ever you are climbing with your mentor. That at least offsets some of the damage and accelerated wear done to your mentors rack whilst you learn. All you should contemplate buying at this stage is a harness, chalk bag, belay device, a couple of nylon slings and screw gates. Supplying a rope once you find a mentor is a great gesture, as is offering to be the transport supplier if you can do so. Don't buy other gear until you know exactly what it is you need.
