just a quick note re conditions at Pollux Outcrop for those who may be interested. Not nearly as exciting as the Peruvian adventures I've just been reading about, Mt Bogong is a wee bit closer to home...
Jono & I were up there on the weekend just gone, there is a fair amount of snow (great skiing I'm sure). Had an awesome time playing round soloing up & down lots of snowy gullies as well as 1 or 2 steeper things. The 'top outs' were a bit scary due too the unconsolidated snow, but there was plenty of nice front pointing to be had. The rock had a lot (20-50cm) of hoar frosting (I think?) over it, which was inherently unstable (read: falling out of the sky) & except for 1 or 2 rare patrches, was far to weak to climb on. Its probably really good practise for NZ, the altitude gain up the Staircase ridge is ~1000m & the snow was in similar to NZ summer conditions. Early morning would be the best (esp after a good freeze), but there is a lot that is shaded all day, so the conditions remained suprisingly constant all day. Watch out for crampons balling up....
