We went via Kaputar en route to Froggy 2 weeks ago. Camped at the upper (better) campsite. Tremendous thunderstorm during the night - soaked everything (need a new tent), and next day visibility of about 50 ft - so we ended up moving on. PF cold too - remember, the campsite is at 1400 m! - and you are expected to bring your own firewood. Otherwise, hot showers and no crowds.
Bungles - if starting from Balor Hut, go for "Cornerstone Rib" (which is actually an extension of the breadknife) or the Diagonal Route" on Crater Bluff. Easy to find and you shouldn't get lost on them. To get off, (especially if you do the Diagonal Route and finish in poor light), make sure you descend via the most westerly "tube" off the back, which becomes the "Green Glacier". The middle tube is a bum steer and requires an abseil. There is a big rap off the back from the end of the glacier. Yes, EARLY start and good batteries in the head torches!
Enjoy!
