Double ropes for Araps?

Hi,

Coming to Australia from the UK in a couple of months. I'll probably mostly be doing sport climbing but was thinking of spending a month in Arapiles when I first get there. Is it worth bringing double ropes along with my single? Can you get by with a single?

Hi OI,

Could be good to let the punters know what level you are climbing at.

All the best,

Rob

Suggest you bring the doubles...

Not much sport climbing at Arapiles

Quite a few of the routes have full length abseils, though you can generally get off these with a full length walk.

rubbish. can do almost everything with a single 60m. can always team up with someone and borrow an
extra rope if needed.
found it rather amusing in the UK where you were looked at strangely if you were trad climbing with a
single rope. most routes are short and a single is almost always fine.

Whilst beefy is probably correct, given the option I would always WANT to be tying into double lines at the base of most araps routes....flexibility, reduction of rope drag, abseils etc.

i'm with beefy, the need for double ropes is way overstated by gear freaks IMO! with a few long draws you can use a single on 95% of routes

you don't need them but i think they are way underrated

They are certainly quite useful on a number of climbs for rope drag and the abseiling decents. They are not needed though as pretty much all araps climbs can be descended with a varrying length walk/scramble and rope drag can be fixed in other ways.

i agree. the best way to improve rope drag problems is to get rid of the rope completely and just solo everything

I'm a fan of double ropes and only use a single for sport or other straightforward stuff.
That said, they are not essential for Arapiles but they are very useful. If you're used to using doubles on crag routes in Britain then you will value having them here.
But... is it worth the hassle of bringing extra ropes? Coming to Arapiles means you're planning to add a trad rack that you otherwise wouldn't bring. Adding an extra rope makes the load that much bigger again. On balance I would say no.

Are you coming for a few months of climbing (in which case 25% of the trip is probabaly going to be at Araps /gramps) or coming for a few months with some climbing added? I'd bring a sport climbing rack and single rope. I have a loaner rack, and if you are goingt o climb at araps, the person you find to climb with will proabably have a rope etc

Cheers for all the replies guys!

To answer some questions; I am coming over for a year on a working visa and thinking of getting work in Sydney (proximity to Blue Mountains, Nowra, etc). I plan to travel for at least a couple of months when I first get there and spend a lot of that time in Arapiles and the Grampians. I'm more of a sport climber and climb about f7b, which i think is around 24/25 Australian grade. More likely, i will be climbing around 20-22 at the most on trad. Looks like I will have a 20kg limit on the plane. Might be cheaper to ditch the tent and buy that over there and take the ropes?

btw, if anyone wants a partner at any time March - May (or after that in Sydney) let me know.

If your comming for a year, then send extra kit surface post. It will get here in a few weeks, then you can
have as much stuff as you want. Iike double ropes as well, as you can do all the routes that are straight
up and down, as well as the ones that wander all over the place.

Rather than post gear out you could always buy some new RPs here and spend the rest of the cash on beer for climbers that you borrow trad gear off. Buy a $30 tent and add a tarp. I'd bring a sport rope and a skinny for multipitch sport and to use as doubles on trad.

One can overplan these things, but I guess it is an expensive place to buy gear.
