Kaj,

Like yourself I am a card-carrying Yorkshireman and have been exiled in Melbourne from my native Sheffield for 18 years.
Can I disappoint you by advising that you don't want to move the Australia for the Winter climbing scene. Although you are only 3 hours by air from the NZ Alps, the winter climbing in Aus is somewhat esoteric and I must say I've had more fun on Stanage in a snowdrift than with ice-axe and crampons on Mt Buller. There are no Point 5 Gullys on the whole continent.
Rock Climbing is somewhat different and I'm sure you will be aware of the jewels that await you at Araps, Gramps, Buffalo, etc although the day climbing round Melb is not exactly up the standard of the Peak District on a warm Summers night.
BTW - what's happening in Emmerdale Farm - is Amos Brierley still landlord of the Woolpack?
