I'm planning a trip there in July next year, anyone been there lately?

I've been scanning the web and found a few conflicting reports so it would be great to get up to date
beta...
What areas did you climb?
The visa and permit process?
Safety in remote areas - personal safely & leaving stuff at camp?

Hey mate,

was over there last year in june july. Not climbing but cycling through the Tin shan mountains, pretty amazing place. We pretty much went off the beaten track and things went a little pera shaped, but for climbing you;ll be ok, plenty of guides and companies that can help you out, either in kyrgystran or kazakhstan.
Few things from our trip that you'll prob find useful,

Organise permits now, paper work is a slow process in both kazak and kyrgys. Figure out your flight route, as you may have to go through Kazakh to get to kyrgys, we went with asiana airlines. Organise permits for where you want to climb the military will not let you in certain places, and some bribes might be needed. though nothing to stressful, we paid 20 us between 4 of us to deviate from out permit ( out of nessecity)

People are super friendly (Just like in Borat).. no seriously they are very genuine and care nothing more than to make you feel welcome in their homes, village Yurt..

Take lots of copies of your maps, these are a great ice breaker, and many of the locals haven't even seen a map of where they live... Give the maps away and you'll make a friend for life.

Learn some basic russian before you go, it'll help with simple conversation and gestures.

Thanks for the info, maps are one of my hold ups at the moment - where did you get yours from?

I am not sure where we got our maps from. ONe of the other guys organised that. But i know that there was a UK based company that did maps. We had a mix of old 1970 SOviet maps, some newer ones and also trekking maps. ANd we ordered them all online. Not much help but you shoudl stumble upon some somewhere.
