Exactly right. The holds are polished and covered with this black shit (pof residue/dirt/bootrubber). And the french seem to think it does less damage than chalk. Some people just go native and do as the french do (and on some slab problems you have little choice but to use it) but it sounds like you're got a conscience and don't wish to contribute to further damage - Good for you.
