The access to Sooty crag in the 2015 Carter guide describes finding a path from the mega long valley road and walking up a track. There is a new fence here erected by an irate farmer who doesn't like randoms crossing his land. He didn't bother to extend his new fence to stop his cows from wandering into the national park however, but I digress. Anyhoos the start of the track is rather hard to find, and it's a mess where it swings around some waterfalls as many fallen trees confuse things. Perhaps it is better to come in from Medlow.
