Amtrak + bus into the valley is fine even when carrying a biggish kit. The main hassle is the time you arrive in the valley. Assuming you are planning on staying in Camp 4, there will be no space, so you'll have to go sleep in the woods for the first night (or make friends quickly) and then join the line up at sparrow's fart the next morning. If you have your room at the Awahnee all booked then no probs.
