Hey Steve. Glad you had a great time. Simey and I saw some of the action as we raced around the cliff base shooting topo images for the new guide. Brings back a few memories..... Chatted to Kevin Lindorff about Kachoong on the Saturday night at Eric Jones' birthday bash at the Nati Hall. Funny how a few red wines fire up the memory cells. Can't say the same about John Smart's words about Kachoong in the latest 'Rock'. His description of events were not quite how I remembered them. And there was certainly no fixed pin in the roof during the first ascent (nor when John Smart and Ajax Greene attempted the second ascent soon afterwards). The fixed pin appeared later on. I don't remember Kevin and I giving Kachoong a grade but I do remember that a few strong parties tried and failed to repeat it at the time. As there was no protection in the roof at all (and no camming devices around then) it was a fairly scary undertaking. If you fell off pulling the lip you were going for a major king swing back down and into the wall. Next year is the 30th anniversary of the first ascent and I may talk Kevin into joining me on swing across memory lane. I'll be sure to clip the pin though........ Glenn.
