I climbed Richard's Route (on the bluff) some years ago. As a long-time scuba instructor, I can tell you one thing: if you were walking around the belay area, on the lower rocks, and slipped into the water, you might be lucky to get back out alive!
The full force of the southern ocean would smash you back into the rocks. I've seen conditons there, where you wouldn't last a minute. Personally, if I fell in there, I'd immediately swim out to sea, as fast as I could, then swim back to the fishermans jetty - keeping well out to sea, until I was back on that side. It wouldn't be fun!
I felt so uncomfortable belaying on Richard's Route, that I did my first trad placement and whacked a cam into a slot to protect myself! Aside from slipping & falling off, I felt there was some risk from the waves below - a big one could easily wash you off the rocks.
So color me conservative but, you need to be careful there, in my opinion! |
