The rock on that wall is quite polished sandstone. After pulling the bolt we ended up climbing Conspiricy which is just to the left of Bartens Effort and just got off after heavy rain hit us. I belayed on the ledge a few meters to the right of Conspiricy to avoid the last ten metres of dirty off width. After ten minutes of rain that whole wall was a waterfall.....literally.... and the bolts I was belaying off were prety much covered in flowing water.
The cliffs above must funnel large ammounts of water onto that section of cliff and I suspect that this higher levels of moisture may be a factor in the rust weakening the bolts integrity??? Wether this is a factor or not I don't know and im only assuming.
Also the polished sandstone that you do find in the Wolgan is super solid on the surface but most of the time its quite thin and lurking below is just choss so this may have been another factor???
It would be interesting to see what other more experienced bolters have to say.
