Myself and a mate went out for a days climbing to the Coal Mines in the Wolgan Valley a few weeks ago. I was interested in doing Bartens Effort a 35m 20 which was described in Wade Stevens guide as having "expansion bolts" and "an absolute classic". After doing "Riding with your daddy" 60m 18 we decided to rap down to check out the bolts and see what condition they were in.
My mate Tim rapped down and using an extendable draw and his own body weight gave each bolt a good outward pulling tug. The third bolt from the ground came out quite easily, all the others remained in place. The bolt had snapped from rust rather than pulling straight out. The guide book also mentions that it is quite run out getting to the third bolt. It is now an extensively longer run out to the next bolt....with a certain ground fall from about 15m.
After seeing this we both decided to give the route a miss. So if your headding out to the Wolgan and up to the Coal mines be aware there is one less bolt on the "absolute classic" Bartens Effort.
