so upon returning from a bit of a tramp in New zealand last week i found a nice little note in the top of my bag informing me that the burners from my trangia stoves had been confiscated. despite the fact there was no fuel left in them. in this age of jet boils and what not does anyone have some burners for these stoves hidden in their gear sacks they wanna off-load?

cheers

WTF? These days I separate any stoves I carry into as many parts as I can and distribute them amongst all my bags wrapped in clothing - including plastic parts in hand luggage (ie MSR pumps).

Metho is no more combustible than the litre of spirits everyone purchases in Duty free.

You are in luck, I have a spare burner for my Trangia (for reasons I won't bother to bore you with). I can let you have the older one for free if you are you happy to pay the postage from Melbourne. Works fine but well used.

Which airline?

I remember getting into an arguement with an air new zealand checkin chick (I KNEW i shouldn't have gone to her and her sour face) years ago and had to trudge the entire length of the airport to rinse out my fuel bottle with soap before she'd accept my bag as baggage...

Try running your trangia on vodka and see if you still think this is the case.

I've got some spare trangia burners and am in Sydney. Where are you? Can you make it to St Peters?

accidentally one trip i managed to fill them with turps. wont make that mistake again....

i flew jetstar but the confiscation was done by christchurch authorities. the burners managed to make their way there tho, which means sydney aint so strict? probably just more volume of traffic.

to quote the letter packed in my bag to transport fuels burner you need to: " drain for a minimum 1 hour upside down and leave open for a further 6 hours, to evaporate any residual fuel. burners can also be filled with a non volatile oil or wrapped in high density polyethylene for transport"

the stupid thing is that even if the minuscule amount of left in the burners after draining could combust, they were essentially locked in a stainless stell blast chamber of a packed trangia!

yeh i am in sydney andrew, often go to st peters PM for a rendezvous :)
