On a slightly more positive note, the original poster is looking in the southern suburbs. From my 17 years of living in Canberra including renting for 4 years in the inner north, I never heard that students were knocking over each other to get into Tuggeranong considering the Universities are all on the North side. Good luck in your searching, Canberra is a great place to live that avoids the pretense offered by the larger cities.
